HAI Welcomes Sri Lankan Health Delegation for a Study Visit on Thailand’s Healthcare Accreditation System

Nonthaburi, Thailand, 15 June 2026 – Dr. Piyawan Limpanyalert, Chief Executive Officer of the Healthcare Accreditation Institute (Public Organization) (HAI), welcomed a delegation from the Patient Safety and Accreditation Bureau (PSAB), Ministry of Health of Sri Lanka, for a study visit on Thailand’s healthcare accreditation system and patient safety development.
The ten-member delegation is led by Dr. Sagari Kiriwandeniya, Deputy Director General of Medical Services, Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka. The visit takes place from 15–19 June 2026 and aims to support knowledge exchange on healthcare quality improvement, accreditation implementation, and patient safety systems.
The programme is hosted by HAI at the National Health Foundation Building in Nonthaburi Province, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office in Sri Lanka, which has helped facilitate collaboration between the two countries.
This study visit follows an executive-level visit by Sri Lankan health leaders in November 2025, which received positive feedback and laid the groundwork for continued technical cooperation. While the previous visit focused on strategic and policy-level perspectives, the current programme places greater emphasis on operational implementation, practical tools, and institutional capacity building for healthcare accreditation.
Dr. Piyawan said HAI is honoured to share Thailand’s experience in developing and implementing healthcare accreditation as a mechanism to improve healthcare quality and patient safety.
“Healthcare accreditation is not only a technical assessment process, but also a learning system that helps healthcare organizations continuously improve the quality and safety of care. We are pleased to exchange experiences with Sri Lanka as the country advances its national accreditation framework,” Dr. Piyawan said.
During the five-day programme, participants will learn about key components of Thailand’s healthcare quality system, including healthcare governance and financing mechanisms, with contributions from the National Health Security Office (NHSO) and Department of Service Support; the healthcare accreditation pathway from application and self-assessment to external survey and accreditation decision-making; surveyor development and capacity building; and the implementation of accreditation standards in tertiary, primary care, and community-based settings.
The delegation will also visit healthcare facilities recognized for their quality improvement efforts. These include Thammasat University Hospital, where participants will observe quality management practices in a tertiary-care setting, and Tha Ruea Hospital in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, where they will learn about district health system strengthening and community-based healthcare integration.
The visit marks another important step in technical cooperation between Thailand and Sri Lanka, supported by WHO, and is expected to contribute to the continued development of Sri Lanka’s healthcare accreditation system in line with international principles and local health system needs.
HAI remains committed to fostering international partnerships, promoting knowledge exchange, and strengthening collaborative networks with countries in the region and beyond. Through these efforts, HAI aims to support the advancement of healthcare quality and patient safety for the benefit of patients, healthcare workers, and communities.
